Your Website Is No Longer the Only Front Door
Google's AI Overviews jumped from 26% to 80% of branded queries in a month. Prospective students now form an impression of your school before they ever reach your website. Here's what that shift means for enrollment, and how to stay in the conversation.

In a single month this fall, Google's AI Overviews went from appearing on about 26% of branded queries to more than 80%, roughly tripling, according to a Search Engine Land analysis of daily branded-keyword tracking. For higher education, that number describes something bigger than a search-engine tweak. The front door to your institution has moved.
Your website is no longer the only storefront
For years, the website was the main storefront, the place every prospective student eventually landed and the experience we optimized above all else. That assumption is breaking. Students now ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini their questions, and Google answers branded searches with an AI Overview right at the top. They get what they need without ever clicking through to your site. The information about your school is being gathered and acted on before you even see the visit.
Brand awareness still decays with distance
None of this removes the oldest truth in enrollment marketing: brand still wins. What AI changes is how visible that brand gap becomes. Map your "brand radius" and the pattern is consistent. You have strong presence within 5 to 10 miles of campus, thinner presence at 25 to 50 miles, overlap with competitors beyond that, and real decay past roughly 100 miles unless you are a nationally known name. Inside Higher Ed's survey of 134 leaders found 61% expected to hit their fall goals, but only 50% among colleges under 2,000 students, and the biggest unsolved challenge they named was brand recognition.
You can't be everything to everyone
Large universities with a hundred-plus programs can afford to be everything to everyone. They have built years of content and the models reward it. Smaller schools should not try to play that game. The move is to double down on what you are genuinely known for, your core programs, your outcomes, your differentiators, so the models cite you as the number-one source for that program in that region. Know where you should be showing up, and why you aren't.
Measure where you show up, and how
It isn't just whether you appear in AI answers. It's where in the answer, and in what tone. Track four things: visibility rate (how often you appear), share of voice (how often you appear when it's relevant to you), citation rate (whether you are actually cited), and sentiment (positive, neutral, or negative). Showing up inside a negative pricing conversation can hurt even when the visibility looks fine. Start with the basics, Google Search Console and GA4 for brand search, then layer in an AEO audit to see how you stand against competitors across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.
Know where the models get their answers
AI engines lean on sources they trust: Wikipedia, YouTube, LinkedIn, Reddit, and niche authorities like US News. YouTube is still one of the most visited search engines on the internet, so if your brand isn't there, even simple campus walkthroughs start to build a presence. Fill out your listings and citations on the places the models actually read, because that is where your brand facts are coming from.
AEO is now part of SEO
This isn't "run Google, run Meta, do a little SEO, done." Answer Engine Optimization belongs inside the SEO plan. Queries have become conversational, like "what psychology programs can I finish in under two years in South Florida?" or "what are the best psychology programs in Miami for outcomes?", and your content has to answer them directly, structured as clear FAQs, with the facts about cost, timelines, and outcomes accurate and consistent everywhere. See AI Search & AEO for Higher Education and a plain-English take on what AEO means.
The takeaway
There are a few front doors now, not one. Prospective students will form an impression of your school before they reach your website, if they reach it at all. The institutions that win will be the ones that are present, accurate, and clearly differentiated in those AI conversations. The front door moved. The job is to be standing in every one.
